June 30, 2015 - School Uniform
POTTSTOWN With a 5-4 vote, a Pottstown School Board motionless Monday night to continue a cessation of a uniform process during Pottstown High School.
The process stays in place in all other schools in a district.
Voting opposite suspending a process were Board President Judyth Zahora, Vice President Andrew Kefer and house members Amy Francis and Mary-Beth Bacallao.
Voting in preference were house members Ron Williams, Polly Weand, Kim Stillwell, Katina Blakey-Bearden and Thomas Hylton.
The cessation of a uniform policy, that began in May, will continue during slightest until a finish of a tumble division during a high propagandize while a administration continues to collect information on how good a high propagandize students are complying with a dress formula that will be enforced instead.
The vote, came as a final object of a evening, and discuss before to a casting focused mostly on a volume of work that had left into a crafting of a process as distant behind as 2007 and either or not uniforms should continue to be compulsory in a reduce grades.
“We’re not finale a (uniform) policy, we’re suspending a policy,” pronounced Hylton, who seconded a suit done by Williams.
“We have new propagandize house members entrance on in Dec and a new principal (Danielle McCoy) starting in September,” pronounced Hylton. “Let’s only see how things go.”
During a month of May, a uniform process was dangling as an examination championed by tyro house members Emanuel Wilkerson and Katrina Belmontes.
Francis remarkable that dress formula violations for a month of this May were higher than a prior May when a uniform process was in place.
But Hylton remarkable that aloft figure was driven mostly by problems in a initial week, and afterwards violations dropped significantly in a weeks that followed.
Francis, who was executive to a bid to put a uniform process in place years ago, again questioned because there is such a rush to lift a process that seems to be operative fine.
“I know that high propagandize students don’t like to wear uniforms, though this seems rushed,” Francis said.
Blakey-Bearden told Francis that “this is a suspension, not an nonexistence of a work we put forward, that was respectable.”
Weand argued that as they get closer to graduation, students need to know how to dress reasonably if they are going to get jobs or pierce on to college.
“This is a doctrine in life,” she pronounced adamantly.
Zahora, who, with Bacallao, participated in a assembly by speaker-phone, objected strenuously.
“If this process goes away, it will never come back,” Zahora said.
Some on a board, including house member Stillwell and Bearden, assimilated house claimant Kurt Heidel in arguing that a cessation of a process should impact a center propagandize and facile grades as well.
“I have not listened one house member speak about how we can make everybody a small bit happy,” pronounced Heidel, who has formerly argued for relaxation a uniform mandate in all a grades.
“I can’t know because there is no compromise, though we competence as good be articulate to a wall,” he said. “In other towns, this opinion competence cost we your chair on a board, though not in Pottstown.”
As a assembly wound down, Wilkerson pronounced he is happy with a uniform vote. “I only wish a students can defend with a house has given them.”
